It can be confusing to know exactly what your rights are when you are shopping in the sales. Shops display signs saying you cannot return items during the sales or get a refund but this does not affect your statutory rights. In this lesson, students will learn that they have the same rights when buying goods in the sales as at any other time of year.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Activity 1: Fill in the blanks

1.  Write the following statement on the white/blackboard: ‘Consumers have the same rights buying in the sales as they do at any other time of the year’.

2.  Ask for a show of hands from those who think this statement is false.

3.  Explain that consumers do have the same rights when they buy during the sales and that the class is going to work together in pairs to find out more about rights when shopping at sale time.

4.  Divide the class into pairs.

5.  Distribute one copy of Student Resource Sheet: Fill in the blanks to each pair and invite them to work together to complete the worksheet. Point out that the first word has been completed for them and the missing words from the remaining sentences are jumbled up at the top of their worksheet.

6.  Once they have completed their worksheets invite pairs of students to swap their worksheets for correction.

7.  Read through each of the sentences on the worksheet, giving the correct answer as you go.

8.  Facilitate a short whole class discussion using the following questions as prompts:

  • Name one thing you learnt during this activity
  • Name one thing that surprised you
  • What would you like to know more about?

Homework Task

Explain it can be easy to lose track of your spending and overspend when shopping during the sales.

Invite students to come up with three tips for making sure that you don’t overspend when shopping during the sales.

The steps for reviewing this homework task are given at the start of Lesson 6.
