There are plenty of reasons to start saving and no doubt you know them all, but when it comes to actually putting the money aside, some people end up spending it. In this lesson students consider their learning to date in Section Three and will specifically look at ways of making saving as painless and easy as possible.

Step-By-Step Instructions

Activity One: Review of Lesson 6 Homework Task

1.  Ask for volunteers to call out their calculation of the amount on deposit for day 5 and day 6 in a savings account earning 200% interest per day (Lesson Six: Homework Task).

2.  Invite students to explain how they worked out these amounts.

Activity Two: Savings – dos and don’ts

1.  Invite the class to imagine that another teacher has heard about what they have been learning in this class. They have been invited to talk to First Year students about savings. They will work in groups to design a presentation for First Years, which will include a summary of what they have learned and the main dos and don’ts when it comes to saving.

2.  Write the following headings on the white/blackboard:

  • Three things that we have learned about saving
  • The thing that we found most interesting
  • The thing that we found most challenging
  • Three things that we would like to know more about
  • The dos and don’ts of saving – ways of making saving pain-free and easy!

3.  Divide the class into small groups.

4.  Distribute flipchart sheets and markers to each group and ask them to brainstorm their responses to the headings on the white/blackboard.

5.  Remind the groups to keep the age group of the audience for their presentation in mind – First Years are 12-years-old so the information they provide should be appropriate to that age group.

6.  Invite each group to the front of the class to practice their presentation.

7.  Record the responses to each question on the white/blackboard and the groups present.

8.  If you find that groups do not mention some or all of the items on the Teacher Information Sheet: Dos and don’ts you should also note these on the white/blackboard.

Homework Task

Ask students to write a short paragraph reflecting on their learning to date in Section 3 and describing how they think their learning impacts, or will impact on their lives.

Depending on your class, you may decide to discuss these reflections once completed.
